Going Nano

Nanotechnology is the science that produces and utilizes particles that measure in the nano (1nm = I billionth of a meter). One of the most popular nano particles is nano silver which has had an impact in the healthcare industry for its antibacterial properties.

Silver has been used for its antibacterial and antifungal properties for centuries in treating medical ailments. With the advent of nanotechnology, silver particles in the nano size (usually 25nm) have been a preferred solution for its effectiveness in killing bacteria and fungi. When a bacterium or fungi comes in contact with the silver, it suppresses its respiration, the basal metabolism of its electron transfer system and the transport of substrates in the microbial cell membrane. “Nano Silver will combine with the cell walls of pathogenic bacteria, will then directly get inside the bacteria and quickly combine with sulphydryl (-SH) of oxygenic metabolic enzyme to deactivate them, to block inhalation and metabolism and suffocate the bacteria.” This inhibits its growth and ability to multiply, stopping infection, odor, itchiness and sores.

Silver is used currently in water purification systems, pool sanitation and by the NASA in purifying water in space shuttles. At the moment, there are over 50 silver based medicines in the market in topical, oral and injectable forms.

Nano silver is currently a technology used in hospitals for dressing burns or wounds and for disinfecting medical products and devices. It has now achieved popular use as a coating for the surface of electronics, carbon blocks, textiles, metals, woods, ceramics, glass, paper, plastic resin and many others. The uniform distribution of nano sized particles in the surface of these products creates a surface area that is infinitely greater than than of silver foil. This enables strong antibacterial effects even with the smallest amount of silver.

Nano silver is also known to not expire, and is unaffected by light, heat and radiations for its healing properties.
