What Mouthwash Does for You
Before we get to the sustainability aspect, let us briefly discuss what mouthwash does for you. At the top of the list is reducing plaque. Bacteria and other microbes can build up on the surface of the teeth. This contributes to plaque buildup. A good mouthwash is designed to reduce plaque by addressing the bacteria and microbes.
A good mouthwash should also:
● Fight gum disease.
● Help prevent cavities.
● Soothe dry mouth.
● Relieve tooth sensitivity.
● Whiten the teeth.
Using our peppermint mouthwash concentrate with an equally effective toothpaste tablet could do wonders for your teeth and gums. But that is not the point of this post. The point is sustainability.
Sold as a Concentrate
EcoFam peppermint mouthwash is sold as a concentrate. Just 2 oz. of the concentrate becomes 16 oz. of mouthwash when you add water. And by the way, you should never use our peppermint mouthwash concentrate until it has been diluted. As for sustainability, let's talk about the concentrate concept.
By creating a concentrate, we don't have to use as many containers to get our peppermint mouthwash into the hands of consumers. Because the concentrate is eight times stronger than traditional mouthwash, we can use just one-quarter of the amount of packaging to distribute our product.
For every single bottle we distribute, a competitor is distributing eight bottles. Our strategy is more sustainable because we are using fewer bottles. That means we are contributing less to the waste stream and not utilizing as many resources to manufacture new bottles.
Recyclable and Reusable Bottles
There is no way to avoid packaging liquid mouthwash concentrate in some sort of bottle. The bottle needs to be sturdy enough to withstand shipping, so something like foam is out of the question. We need a more rigid material. But that doesn't mean we have to utilize single-use plastic bottles. And we don't.
EcoFam peppermint mouthwash concentrate is packaged in recyclable glass bottles, not single-use plastic. If you don’t want to keep an empty bottle around, that’s fine. It is easily recycled. Put it in your curbside recycling bin if your community offers such a service. If not, contact your county to find out where you can drop off recyclables.
If you do want to use the bottle for something else, that’s great too! A cleaned bottle makes a great reusable water bottle you can fill at home. Every clean bottle you use for water is one less single-use plastic bottle you need to pay for.
Fewer Resources, Less Waste
There are lots of ways to approach the sustainability concept. When it comes to sustainable oral care, the goal is twofold:
1. Fewer Resources
